Consumer Unit Upgrades & Fuse Board Replacements in London
Modern consumer unit upgrades for homes and apartments across London.
Kingfisher Electrical Solutions replaces and upgrades older fuse boards and consumer units with modern protection designed around the existing electrical installation. All upgrades include appropriate inspection and testing, professional installation and electrical certification on completion.
Consumer Unit Replacement Cost
The cost of replacing a consumer unit depends on the size of the installation, number of circuits and condition of the existing wiring.
For a typical residential installation, our consumer unit upgrades start from £800+VAT, including supply of the consumer unit and circuit breakers, installation, electrical testing, certification, and building control notification.
Before replacement, we will assess where possible the existing installation and identify any issues that may need to be addressed before or during the upgrade. This means you’ll receive a clear quotation based on your property rather than unexpected costs once work has started.
All of our consumer unit upgrades are completed to the highest standard, and will include the following:
Modern 18th Edition metal consumer unit
Individual RCBO protection for all applicable circuits
Surge protection device
Removal of existing consumer unit
Installation of new consumer unit and all associated wiring
Testing of all existing circuits
Electrical Installation Certificate
Building Regulations notification
Final pricing depends on the number of circuits, accessibility and condition of the existing electrical installation. Any additional remedial works identified will be discussed before proceeding.
What’s Included In a Consumer Unit Upgrade?
-
We assess the existing consumer unit, incoming supply, earthing and circuits before replacement. This helps identify existing faults or issues that could affect the upgrade.
-
The existing board is removed and replaced with a modern consumer unit incorporating individual RCBO protection and surge protection where appropriate. Circuits are clearly identified and the installation is completed neatly with consideration given to the existing cable routes and surrounding finishes.
-
Following installation, the circuits are electrically tested to verify the effectiveness of the protective measures and confirm the installation is suitable to be placed back into service.
-
On completion, the appropriate electrical certification is provided together with Building Regulations notification where applicable. We will also explain the new consumer unit, circuit identification and operation of the protective devices.
If testing identifies an existing defect or circuit requiring remedial work, we’ll explain the issue and discuss the available options before carrying out additional work.
Do I Need to Replace My Fuseboard?
An older fuse board does not automatically mean that your electrical installation is unsafe or that it must be replaced. However, modern consumer units provide significantly improved protection, and there are several situations where an upgrade may be recommended.
Older Fuse Boards & Rewireable Fuses
Properties with older fuse boards may still use rewireable fuses or older protective devices. Depending on the condition and design of the installation, upgrading to a modern consumer unit can provide improved protection and make circuit isolation and fault identification considerably easier.
Limited or No RCD Protection
Modern electrical installations commonly use additional RCD protection for circuits where required. Older installations may have limited RCD protection or none at all. We can assess the existing arrangement and advise whether a consumer unit upgrade is appropriate.
Damaged or Deteriorated Equipment
Signs of overheating, physical damage, loose connections or deterioration should be investigated by a qualified electrician. Depending on the findings, repair may be possible or replacement of the consumer unit may be recommended.
Renovating or Extending Your Property
A refurbishment, extension or significant alteration to an electrical installation is often a sensible time to assess the existing consumer unit. Additional circuits or changes to the installation may mean the existing equipment is no longer the most appropriate solution.
Following an EICR or Electrical Inspection
An EICR may identify issues with the existing consumer unit or the protection provided to individual circuits. We can review the findings, explain what they mean and provide a quotation for any recommended upgrade or remedial work.
